GALAXY was a IMAX 3D Motion Simulator like no other (the BEST from what I’ve seen so far) because it looked like the real thing and in my opinion was even better then the Back To The Future ride in Universal Studios Orlando (and I’m a big BTTF fan!). SYNOPSIS: Asteroid Adventure (called GALAXY in Phantasialand) is the first IMAX SIMULATOR RIDE shot and projected in the IMAX HD Dome format. At 48 fps, IMAX® HD offers the audience images of unparalleled brilliance, sharpness and clarity. The adventure begins as the audience climbs aboard the latest generation of space vehicles. Instead of a leisurely excursion to an asteroid colony, the journey takes an unexpected twist as the audiences respond to an urgent plea for assistance. The generator providing life support to the colony is on the brink of destruction. Mission: locate and destroy the mysterious electrical virus that is wreaking havoc on the asteroid colony and restore the power generation capabilities to the asteroid. Time is running out. Unfortunately GALAXY has been replaced by another 3D movie called Race For Atlantis which is the same one as in Las Vegas. This one is less fun and you can clearly see that it is made with the computer. Besides that it’s dubbed into German while GALAXY had it’s original American voice cast! Rest in piece GALAXY, you will be missed.

This roughly 30-minute feature–also available in The Ultimate 3-D Collection, which includes two other films and the H3D “i-glasses” hardware needed to generate the 3-D imaging–tells the story of alien pioneers inadvertently discovering Earth through a high-tech amusement park. The story is mindless, but the sense of depth conveyed here is quite convincing, especially during the many point-of-view sequences. The image and color resolution of the digital animation leaves much to be desired, however, proving unrewarding in 2-D.
That said, certain sequences shine, most notably a lengthy slide through an arctic wonderland of vast nighttime icescapes and narrow roads through head-spinning chasms.
